Why Love Island makes straight women want to give up dating
So, Jordan is the latest to join the pile of Love Island men that makes all straight women watching want to give up dating forever.
I have had an off vibe from Jordan for a while, he hasn’t reacted very well to past actions from other men. For example, more than any of the other boys at the time, he seemed to failed to understand what Tom had done wrong when he questioned if she was "all mouth or not". But I did think he genuinely liked Anna, didn’t we all?
So his “having his head turned” two days after a grand (and long) ask to Anna to be his girlfriend shocked us all.
There appears to be a theme here between Michael, Curtis and Jordan of total disregard for the feelings of the women they are coupled up with/fancy/are in a relationship with.
This works on multiple levels, from not caring enough to break up with someone before “cracking on” with another person, to not actually checking if someone fancies you back before deciding to “crack on” with them.
I simply marvel at the level of entitlement needed to pull off this prioritisation of your own feelings and desires regardless of the feelings of anyone around you. All three men seem to have taken the aim of the show (to find love) to mean “jump at whoever you fancy, no matter what you have promised anyone else, no matter what the object of your desire feels.”
This contrasts with the way the girls have approached similar situations: Amy left while Michael stayed, Anna expressed concern for both Ovie and Jordan when she wronged them, Amber felt uncomfortable cracking on with Gregg near Michael.
This centring of the emotions and perspectives of men while those of women are set to one side has been called by philosopher Kate Manne himpathy. This is the product of a society where men are not taught to consider women’s feelings in the way women are about men, a society that tells men they are entitled to conquer women rather than forming relationships with them as equal partners.
Personally, the lack of empathy and compassion shown by these men is scary for those of us who date men and all the women on the show can see it.
